MATCH REPORT - Aveley - 12/01/26
Aveley 3 (Harris 18, Peters 60 pen, 70) - Billericay Town 0
Ollie Peters came back to haunt his former club with a second half brace as Aveley booked their place in the Essex Senior Cup final for the first time in 15 years with a convincing victory over Billericay Town. Peters’ double added to Chris Harris’ first half opener as the Millers eased past their Isthmian Premier League rivals at Parkside.
Billericay saw more of the ball in the early stages but struggled to turn possession into meaningful chances. The Blues’ only effort of note in the opening exchanges came via Callum Watts, whose ambitious lob from 30 yards drifted comfortably wide of Rylee Mitchell’s goal.
Aveley grew into the contest and took the lead on 18 minutes. Matt Johnson’s long throw was only partially cleared, and the former Ricay skipper delivered a pinpoint cross that picked out Harris, who made no mistake from six yards to continue his fine scoring record against Billericay this season.
The hosts were now on top and went close to extending their advantage just after the half hour, with Ryan Henshaw firing over from a promising position. Aveley then struck the woodwork six minutes later when Braintree loanee Fletcher Hubbard crashed an effort against the post, with Ricay keeper Jacob Adams reacting well to deny Johnson’s follow up.
Despite offering little in the final third, Billericay had the last chance of the half as Tyrese Owen’s glancing header was deflected away by a cluster of Aveley bodies, and the Millers went into the break a goal to the good.
The Blues emerged with more intent after the restart and Watts again looked the most likely to threaten, dragging an effort wide from the edge of the box. Harris then went close to adding another to his tally, but his header was straight at Adams from close range.
The tie swung decisively in Aveley’s favour just before the hour. Hubbard threaded an excellent pass through to the onrushing Jayden Gipson, who was brought down in the area by Alfie Cerulli. Referee Craig Barnett pointed to the spot and dismissed the Billericay winger, and Peters calmly converted the resulting penalty to double the lead.
With a man advantage, Aveley were firmly in control and sealed their place in the final with 20 minutes remaining. Gipson again surged down the right flank before cutting the ball back for Peters, who applied a composed finish to claim his second of the night.
Billericay managed a late push for a consolation goal and went close on 90 minutes, Liam Nash’s effort superbly deflected over by Harry Haysom to preserve the clean sheet.
The win extends Aveley’s unbeaten run to 17 matches and sends them through to a long-awaited cup final, while the Blues now turn their attention to Saturday’s league visit of Brentwood Town.
