MATCH REPORT - Brentwood Town - 17/01/26

Billericay Town 1 (Long 22) – Brentwood Town 0

Elliot Long’s 22nd minute strike proved decisive as Billericay Town edged past local rivals Brentwood Town in a tight but entertaining encounter at New Lodge.

The away side threatened early and almost took the lead inside five minutes, but Matt Cripps could only glance his effort wide at the near post. Keon Lewis-Burgess responded with Billericay’s first attempt on ten minutes but couldn’t keep his shot down from the edge of the box.

Chances were at a premium until Billericay broke the deadlock on 22 minutes. Some excellent work from Charlie Ruff saw him win back possession in the Brentwood half, before playing in Long who cut inside and found the net via the upright.

Billericay were in the ascendency but were lucky not to be reduced to ten just past the half hour, as Tyrell Miller-Rodney’s illustrious challenge was not deemed worthy of a second yellow card by Deryll David despite vigorous appeals from the away side.

Brentwood went closest to adding to the scoreline before the break, but Ade Cole’s free kick flew over Jacob Adams’ bar and the hosts went into half time a goal in front.

Billericay started the second half on the front foot and almost doubled their lead within a minute of the restart, but this time Long’s curling effort went just the wrong side of the upright. A goalmouth scramble from a corner almost saw Ruff convert from close range, before he went close again on 55 minutes but his audacious looping effort fell onto the roof of the net.

The away side then spurned their best chance of the game just before the hour mark, as a teasing cross from Daniel Ogunleye found the unmarked Kymani Thomas at the back post, but the Brentwood winger could only strike the post from point-blank range.

Alejandro Machado came close to an equaliser moments later with a free kick that flashed wide, while Billericay captain Ryan Scott glanced a header past the post at the other end.

The away side ramped up the pressure as the game entered the latter exchanges and came close once more with ten minutes remaining, when Machado met Benas Vaivada’s corner but saw his attempt fly narrowly wide.

Brentwood saw plenty of possession and set pieces in the final moments, but the home defence stood strong and saw out the win, giving Danny Scopes’ side back-to-back league wins for the first time this season.

The win moves Ricay up to eighth ahead of next weekend’s trip to Chatham Town, who overtook Brentwood into second place following today’s set of results.
