MATCH REPORT - Carshalton Athletic - 20/12/25

Billericay Town 1 (Long 40) – Carshalton Athletic 0

Elliot Long’s third goal in two games was enough to see Billericay Town past a game Carshalton Athletic side and end a run of three league matches without a win. Long’s looping first half header came after a sustained spell of Ricay pressure, and the Blues held on despite the Robins creating several moments in the second half to record their first league clean sheet at New Lodge this season.

The home side started on the front foot and had the first attempt of the game as Jack Evans stung the palms of Matt Kerbey from the edge of the box. Billericay continued to probe and went close again 12 minutes in, but Frankie Merrifield was unable to get a clean strike away after turning well inside the area.

Kerbey was then required to make a superb save six minutes later after Long found Liam Nash in space in the box, with the Carshalton shot stopper equal to the Billericay forward’s powerful effort.

The half was a scrappy affair and saw little goalmouth action, until the breakthrough arrived on 40 minutes. Evans’ corner was not properly cleared and Long reacted quickest, expertly looping his header over Kerbey’s dive and into the net to give the Blues a deserved lead.

Carshalton had little to show for their efforts in the opening period but came close to an equaliser a minute after falling behind, when a dangerous cross from the left found the head of Kola Salami, who could only nod over from close range. Ollie Parsons had the final chance of the half for Billericay, meeting another Evans corner but diverting his header wide.

The second half provided far more action, with chances at both ends in the opening ten minutes. Nash was denied once again by Kerbey before the visitors spurned two gilt edged opportunities in quick succession, Bryan Ifeanyi’s deflected shot creeping wide before Luke Read somehow skewed a header wide with the goal at his mercy.

Billericay responded with further pressure of their own and Nash came inches away from doubling the lead, his glancing header flashing just past the post. Both sides turned to their benches as the game entered the final 20 minutes, and it was one of those Ricay substitutes, Charlie Ruff, who went close to a debut goal, his deflected effort drifting narrowly wide.

As the Robins pushed forward in search of an equaliser, the game opened up further. They nearly found it on 74 minutes, but Sam Donkin reacted well to keep out Josh Shonibare’s powerful drive at the second attempt. Moments later an inswinging corner appeared to be bundled home, but despite loud appeals from the away support, the officials were unmoved.

Nerves were tested when ten additional minutes were signalled, yet it was Billericay who came closest to sealing the contest. Callum Watts struck the post from the edge of the box, before substitute Alfie Cerulli was denied by the fingertips of Kerbey, who then repeated the feat in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

It mattered little in the end, as the Blues safely negotiated the remaining moments to secure all three points, moving up to ninth in the table, while Carshalton remain just outside the relegation zone.
